Meeting Reminder

The May meeting will be on Monday 5th May at 7.30pm. Program will be about a Jaquard loom and is technique. Goodies provided by Wendy and Catherine. Gabriele would like to remind you to bring your own cup. It was decided at the last meeting that everyone was to bring there own cup from now on. Sorry it was left out of the minutes. We will be discussing the Quilting show. See you all next Monday.

Tips when buying a Loom

Special Considerations When Buying a Used Loom
Why is the Weaver selling this loom?
If she really is a weaver, chances are that she is upgrading to a larger or a more complex loom and if living close by, may be a great source of help. If she is someone who does not really weave, beware! She may not be weaving because her loom is not fully functional. She is frustrated and is giving up.
If it is part of an estate, make sure that the loom is functional and all of the parts are there. Take an experienced weaver with you to see it. Be particularly careful of a disassembled loom as it may be missing parts. Be cautious of a “beautiful piece of antique furniture” masquerading for a functional loom. The antique dealer may not know how to weave of even tell if a loom is functional.

In what shape is this loom?
Check the obvious for use and abuse. Was this loom stored in the non-air-conditioned/unheated barn for many years? What is the state of the wood? Of the metal parts?
It may be hard to tell how well the loom will weave. Putting a warp across the width of the loom may be the only sure way to know. It is always possible to draw up a contract where final sale depends on this kind of check.

Who made the loom?
Is the manufacturer still in business if you need replacement parts.
Be particularly careful with homemade looms that were never used. There may be a reason for that. I saw a loom once with one side exactly 1" longer than the other.
Also, be careful with homemade looms whose maker is no longer available to make replacement parts.

What are you getting with this loom?
It may sound like a great deal until you realize the extras that you have to buy, either because the current owner wants to keep them or because they have been lost. Make sure that, when everything is added up, it wouldn’t be better to buy a new loom.
Check carefully what else may have to be replaced-rusted heddles, rusted or bent reeds, etc. Add those to the cost of the loom when comparing.
Are you getting and paying for something you do not need? A sectional warp beam may be an expensive add-on that you will not use and may even get in the way. Compare the cost of the used loom to that of a loom without the extra add-on.
Watch out for similar “deals” like boxes of unusable yarn ( I don’t bring home those moths).

April get togethers

Nine of us enjoyed a relaxing 'spin in' at Gudruns'. She made a lovely Vegetable soup. Before we left Gudrun showed us her Tapestry she is presently working on. It is just beautiful such alot of work and time being put into it. I will post a picture of it later.

Mona hosted a 'knit in' on Monday. Wendy showed everyone how to make one of Darlenes' Knitted Beaded Bracelets. Mona spoilt everyone by making a tasty Vegetable soup and followed by a yummy Lime cheesecake for lunch.

Last night Jean and I along with Gabriele and Noelle joined Ann for an evening spin in at her house.

French Art Thief

A thief in Paris planned to steal some priceless paintings from the Louvre. After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings and made it safely to his van. However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of fuel.

When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied, 'Monsieur, that is the reason I stole the paintings. I had no Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh.'

Quilt guild show answers to ?s

Just a follow-up to questions asked of me at your guild meeting...I asked the questions at the quilt guild show meeting and here is the guilds reply.

Registration Forms - each item that is to be displayed as part of the guild is to be on a separate form. Display items within the Spinners & Weavers display area should be looked after by the Spinners & Weavers Guild

Sale Items in the Spinners & Weavers Guild area will be allowed, however the Shuswap Quilters Guild policy is that 10% of each sale price is to be paid to the Shuswap Quilters Guild.

Kid's Weaving area within the Spinners & Weavers area was well received and the Shuswap Quilters Guild would like your guild to do that.

April Minutes of the SSWG Meeting.

Minutes of the Shuswap Spinners and Weavers April 7,2008.16 members present.
1. Minutes of the March meeting adopted as printed by Judith, Wendy seconded. Carried.

3. Announcements:1. Date changes: Spinning fine fibre - May 31-June 1. Beyond the tea towel - April 26-27. 2. Noelle gave a report on the Fall Fair meeting. Theme this year is Ribbons, Reins and Rosebuds and so much more. Sept. 5-6-7. 3. Sheep to Shawl - invitations to Kelowna, Langley, Vernon and Lumby.So far no judge yet. Spinners are Elvi,Gloria, Sara and Catherine. Weaver is Marcia.
4. Workshop- Note date changes above. Sharon also contacted Margaret Hahn about a rep weave workshop in the Fall.
5. Christmas sale in November. The theme is TREES.

Shuswap Quilters Guild registration form

The form would not download on to this blog. In Sharons email she offered to leave hard copies at The Sewing Basket and Pleasant Valley Quilting and bring hard copies to our next meeting so I have asked her to do that. The entry show info' is below.

Shuswap Quilters' Guild Quilt Show Entry Information 2008

EVERYBODY LOVES QUILTS - 2008 SHOW presented by the Shuswap Quilters’ Guild June 6th & 7th at the Salmon Arm Curling Rink.

GENERAL INFORMATION;
Each article must -
a) Have a label with your name, address and phone number securely fastened on the back or only for Wearable Art, label can be on inside of garment.
b) Have a fabric bag for carrying, with your name, address and phone number. This information should be attached to each bag near the opening of the bag.
c) Be prepared for presentation by making sure it is clean, no loose threads. A sleeve for hanging is preferred.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE:
Complete one registration form for each article to be entered in the show. Please indicate on your form if showing wearable art for the fashion show you will model the item yourself or wish to have someone else model for you. If you have a set of items only one registration form is required. Give these forms to the registration committee by May 14th. (Late registrations cannot be accepted)
CHALLENGE ITEMS AND UFO ENTRIES are due May 14th.
DROP-OFF:
Show articles are to be dropped off at the Salmon Arm Curling Rink on Wednesday, June 4th between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (We regret that late entries cannot be accepted.)
PICK-UP: Articles can be picked up Sunday June 8th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Curling Rink. Receipt must be presented for pickup.

Please do not forget that your item for the Blanket Chest must be ready for the show and tell at the potluck supper at Marcia on June 2nd.
2. Quilt Show 2008.
Sharon Adair came and spoke to us about the Quilts Show 2008. The show is being held at the Curling Rink in Salmon Arm on June 6 - 7. We have been invited and given a 20' x 20' display area. So what are we going to display? Bring you ideas to the May meeting as it will be discussed. You are also invited to take part in the fashion show on the Saturday at 2pm.
3. Are you interested in doing a Painted Warp Workshop taught by Gudrun to take place end of July/beginning of August, if yes please tell Gudrun or Noelle.

April 'Spin in' and 'Knit in'

Tuesday 15th 'Spin in' at Gudruns' 10am - 2pm.
Monday 21st 'Knit in' at Monas' 10am - 2pm.
Tuesday 22nd 'Spin in' at Anns' 7pm - ?

Program

Gudrun showed us a scarf she had woven and then painted. She explained the process.
She told us to look at pictures in magazines etc and use those colours in our paints.

Show and Tell

Sorry, I forgot to take my camera to the meeting but the show was a feast for the eyes!
Ann had made Kumihimo braids to be straps on her bags that she had weaved.
Wendy showed everyone her beaded knitted bracelet.
Darlene had several Kumihimo plus some handspun Corriedale 'northern lights'.
Elvi had woven teatowels and a table runner. Plus novelty yarn that she had brought in Palm Springs. Just yarn tied in 3 places and they called it a designer scarf!
Gudrun had woven placemats with trees in them (our Christmas Sale theme) Also showed us 'The Coverlet Book'.
Jean had sewn a jacket poly woven material on the outside and fleecy on the inside. Jean makes all her own clothes!
Marcia show us her felted pansy cushion. She felt the pansies where to small so felted other piece but to big. Looked great to me.
Sharon had knitted a shawl with beads.
Mona a teatowel and she had finished her Mobius made out of 2 ply merino and 1 ply silk. Just beautiful.
Noelle had some Kumihimo too.

Leclerc Minerva Folding 8 harness floor loom (jack) - weaves 21 -22 inches wide. Great for courses. It has three reeds 12';10';6' plus raddle. It has extra heddles, leach sticks, 1' sectonal warp beam easily removed.

Vernon 'Spin in'

Saturday was Vernon Spin in. Thank you Trixie and all you other ladies for all your hospitality. The lunch, snacks, door prizes and friendship. The 'spin in' started at 10am. Upon 'checking in' we received a coloured badge with a beaded spindle on it and our name and were to put our spinning wheels e.t.c. in a circle with other of the same coloured badge. A great way to meet new friends. For Sale tables were there occupied by Sharon and Heather(?) selling her beaded jewellery. We spun until lunch and then at 2pm had a Show and Tell. So many talented ladies in the room. I have posted some photos of items that I heard had the most WOWS! The 'spin in' finished at 4pm. I did not get much spinning time in as was too busy trying out peoples wheels watching the spinning and mainly net working the later was the most enjoyable.
