What do Egyptian mummies, Viking sails, M'Lady's corset, linseed oil, flax bread and linen towels have in common? Come to the Linen Festival at Joybilee Farm on August 9th and find out. This will be a fun and educational day.
Our fiber flax field will be harvested. Every step from field to finished cloth will be explained and you can participate in breaking flax and hackling it ready for spinning. Spin some linen and even try your hand at weaving. Linen was an important crop in the Boundary area as recently as the 1950s. Several locally grown, hand spun and hand woven linen textiles are on loan to Joybilee Farm, for your enjoyment, as part of this exceptional event. Petting zoo with baby llamas, goats and sheep. ART sale and artisan studio open. Artisanal flax seed bread also available for sale. Live music.
$5 admission for the day (family rate: $20; Groups of 10 or more $4 each), includes refreshments. The whole family is welcome.
Then two weeks later…
August 22 and 23, 2008 1pm to 4pm Natural Indigo Dye Demonstration at Joybilee Farm.
No admission charge and farm tours available for a small fee.
In conjunction with Spencer Hill Orchard and Gallery in Grand Forks and the Boundary Spinner and Weaver Guild, Joybilee Farm will host an indigo dye demonstration.
Attend the free showing of the Maiwa documentary "Indigo - A World of Blue" at the Spencer Hill Orchard and Gallery at 7- 9 pm on Friday night. Then come to Joybilee Farm on Saturday and see hand woven shibori textiles dip dyed in a natural indigo fermentation vat. The natural fermentation vat is eco-friendly and allows a greater depth of blue to be laid down on the cloth.
Woad-indigo garden and seeds for sale.
ART Sale of indigo dyed scarves and shawls, indigo dyed ikat yarns and natural dye kits. No admission charge.
Undyed silk or quilting cotton may be purchased at a small cost if you would like to participate in the indigo dyeing and take home a memento of your day. Whole family welcome to this fun, hands on, and educational day.
We're located in B.C. on Hwy. 3 one hour East of Oosoyos, and 20 minutes West of Grand Forks. Just 522 km East of Vancouver or 700 km West of Calgary. Camping available near by.
Open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday till Thanksgiving Day.

Salmon Arm Fall Fair

Sue and Shirley are wondering what we could do that would be new and exciting for the kids area at the Salmon Arm Fair. We were thinking of a knotted and /or felted bracelet dyed in Kool Aid, something simple to make that each child could leave the area wearing. However we need some technical advise......or any other ideas you ladies may have. This would be an additional project besides the weaving on the loom. Fleece weight in gold

Simon and Priscilla Cameron, who farm at Ben Ohau Station in the MacKenzie District, won two trophies at the Ermenegildo Zegna awards in Sidney recently.
The prize was the fleece's weight in gold, and with the 10.8 micron fleece weighing in at 1.47kg, the couple are taking home about $54,000 at current gold prices.
Simon Cameron says a balance of genetics, correct nutrition and good management are the secrets behind production award winning fleece.

Haney Heritage Park

Hi Clare, I had a phone call from Haney Heritage Park yesterday and they are wanting about 4 spinners for July 13, Forestry Days. I am going to go and I am looking for 3 others to join me. They would like us set up by 10 am and there is a pancake breakfast that starts at 9 am. They hope that we would be there by 9:30 and get set up. Apparently there is no admission charge and a separate parking area for exhibitors (spinners in this case).Could you forward this message to anyone you think might be interested and let me know if you would care to join me?
