Katarzyna was cycling by with her husband this afternoon and had to call in when she saw the sheep in the field. "Are you a felter?" she asked my husband."No I am a Fensom!". A polish girl, living in Ireland staying with her husband's uncle in Salmon Arm and wanted to felt. She is only here for a few days so asked if she would be coming back "No, I do not like Canada" "Why?" "I don't like the food"!

Looms, looms and more looms

I was asked by a dear lady down in Chilliwack if I'd come and take some photos and put an ad in our blog re this great loom which she is selling. She's now living in a "walled city" for seniors and simply doesn't have room. It is a great 8-harness loom with lots of bells and whistles - includes some AVL end-feed shuttles, the warping mill, tool shelf, bench and a few reeds! Her contact number is 250-703-0029 for more information. I hope we can find this loom a new home. Sharon

Here's the info on my loom: 36" leclerc floor loom $350.00 includes 8 dent reed, bobbins, shuttles, bobbin winder, skein winder, warping board, bench selection of yarns Judy 250-832-2195

Our good friend Shawn Martin phoned to say that they , Shawn and his new wife Irene, will be selling the big house and moving and that they will be selling the loom and other related bits that my friend Deb used. It is a Leclerc and it is either 36 or 45 inch..It will be going for about 200.00 or best offer.( much less probably)There is also a piano that they will give away. An old upright. If anyone is interested they can call me at 838 0232. Marcia Duthie. These items have to be picked up and the location is Westbank.

1. 4- harness, 45 inch Jack loom in good shape with two reeds, warping board and bench.$300
2. 4 - harness, 60 inch Nilus Leclerc loom. Comes with a sectional warp beam, at least one reed, tension box and extra heddles. It requires some TLC but would make a good loom for anyone interested in doing some rug weaving. $250

Minutes of the Shuswap Spinners and Weavers May 3, 2010. 14 members present
1. Gabriele read the minutes of the April meeting. Sharon moved they be adopted as read, Mona seconded. Carried
2. Treasurer gave her report. Also "Vav" has been renewed for 2 yrs.
3. Library - new issues of "Vav" , "Spin-off" and "Handwoven" are in.
4. Fibres Unlimited - sign up if you wish to do the supplementary warp runner.Catherine and Gudrun are working on a shawl on the big loom.
5. Christmas Sale - Nov. 27 "Stockings "To quote Gudrun " weave, weave, weave......knit, knit, knit........etc" Posters are needed for the fairs.
6. Sheep to Shawl - still need a judge
7. Ukanknits at Mona's and Spin-In at Clare's : A wonderful time was had a both!!!!
8. ANWG Contribution- It was decided to make invitation size handmade paper with thrums. Gudie would teach us, and we would work in 2 groups. At the next meeting we will decide on times in the summer to get together.
9. Potluck Dinner- June 7 at 6:oopm at Elvi's

2. Treasurer gave her report. Noelle moved that we re-new our subscription to "Va" (2 yr) . Anne seconded. Carried
3. Library- An on-going list of wish books to be posted on the bulletin board. Jean donated past copies of the "Bulletin" . They will be in a binder.Also she donated some "Thread" magazine - may be had for a donation to the guild.
4. Equipment - Everything is in except for one spinning wheel.
5. Clare is looking for news items.
6. Fibres Unlimited - Enough has been woven for 21 salmon.
7. Christmas Sale - No. 27 "Stockings"
8. Mona gave a report on ANWG. It will be on the blog. Donations are being sought for goodie bags for the conference in Portland in 2011.

Thank you to all of you who came to my 'spin in' at my farm Harmonious Homestead and ewe. After you all retreated home Gudie and I took cover from the rain in the shop. We were joined soon after by Gudrun and Alfred and then Kyla and her children. In between the rain showers people till visited and the shop became very warm and cosy full of people drinking tea and munching on my sheep cookies. Clare.

Yesterday was a beautiful hot day so I guess most members were gardening. I arrived at Mona's to find her, Elvi and Darlene struggling to knit the shrug (pattern was e mail to you all) It did not take long before Judith came to the rescue! Thank you for the chili and cake Mona, and we look forward to seeing Darlene's and your shrug at the next meeting!!

Gudie's 'spin in'

Friday 9th April all of us woke up to a blanket of snow but approx 13 of us spent most of the day at Gudies. After a lunch break of Cake with rum sauce (thank you Werner) we watched the DVD of Gudie's and Werner's holiday in Colombia. I really enjoyed it and so did all as alot of questions were asked.

1. 45" Four Harness Jack Style Floor Loom built by H. Luther of Lac la Hache. All hardware is from LeClerc - wire heddles, single beam, 6 treadles. Comes with 10 and 12 dent reeds, lease sticks and weaving bench. Very good condition. $350

2. 60" Nilus LeClerc Four Harness Loom. Good condition - has been stored. Has sectional warp beam and wire heddles (extra heddles included). Jack type with rising shed. Comes with tensioner, lease sticks and reed. $450

Judith called the meeting to order and welcomed Linda Nichols.
1. Minutes of the February meeting adopted as printed by Noelle, Glenda seconded.
2. Noelle gave the treasurer's report.
3. Fibres Unlimited - Elvi reported that the salmon are coming along. 4-5 have been woven.
4. Workshops- Marcia suggested several workshops -boundweave, tapestry. Sharon doing a transparency workshop in the fall. If you have any requests please talk to Marcia.
5. Christmas Sale - Nov. 27,2010. "Stockings" You can never start too early.
6. Sheep to Shawl - Still need more spinners. So far only Catherine has stepped forward. Marcia will be the weaver.
7. Ukanknits gathered at the mall for heritage week.
Old Business
1. Reminder to e-mail Trixie if attending the Kalamalka Spin-In March 27. Info is on the blog.
2. Discussion of meeting times: It was decided to think about this further and make a decision later in the year before the winter months.
New Business
1. No donation to be made to ANWG
2. Next meeting - April 12, instead of April 5 (Easter Monday)
3. Spin-Ins: March 16 at Jean's 10-2March 25 at Noelle's 7-9Knit-In March 22 at Gloria's 10-2

SPOTLIGHT ON TWO WORKSHOPS

Serendipity in a Cup - Color Essence for Hand Weavers with Kris Abshire
May 20 & 21

From the soft, muted watercolor effects of Monet to the bright, brilliant color contrast of Van Gogh, to clear and crisp edged images as in Matisse, this workshop will provide methods and techniques for applying permanent, colorfast dyes and paints to the handwoven cloth. With a “no limits” design approach in color application to both warp and weft available only to handweavers, we will explore various techniques of precise imagery as well as the freedom of serendipitous “gay abandon”.

Students will learn that using the simplest, inexpensive tools and supplies, they may apply these methods to virtually any weaving project – wearables, wall pieces, rugs, pillows, throws and jewelry. Even thrums become gorgeous possibilities.

In addition to all silk yarns for dyeing, each student will be provided all workshop dyes, their own personal "color wheel" dye kit to take home, class handouts with instructions, resource references, and bibliography of suggested reading. This is a two-day “no loom” class where you concentrate on color play!

Marcia and Wendy were both knitting cotton sleeveless sweaters.
Gloria - Thrummed mitts.
Judith - Catherdal mitts.
Darlene - 'boobs'
Mona - Scarf.
Clare - Sucky thrum miits.
Ann and Elvi were both spinning. Ann was spinning some Aurellia corriedale 29 microns. Elvi some Merino sliver 100% wool from the fleece artist in Nova Scotia.

Mona moved that the minutes of the Dec. 2009 meeting be adopted as printed. Noelle seconded.
Our thoughts were with Sara at the passing of her mother. Gabi will send a card.
Noelle presented the treasurer's report . Glenda seconded it.
There was discussion on changing the time of our meetings to perhaps an afternoon time or earlier in the evening. Judith will put it on the blog to be discussed at a later time.
Committee Reports:
a) Library- All fines except for one are paid up. New magazines - Knits, Handwoven, Vav and Spin-Off are in .
b) Equipment - Gullan used the mannequins for the loppett.
c) Historian- Wendy showed the new binder. If you have any articles please give them to Wendy.
d) Fibres Unlimited - weaving the salmon. Anne and Gabriele are putting a supplementary warp on for eight harnesses.
e) Workshop- Computer workshop Feb. 6, 2010 from 1-3pm at Melissa's - "How to sell on the internet". "How to sell on the internet".
f) Christmas Sale - Nov. 27,2010 Gudrun and Gudie will co-ordinate it. The theme is Christmas stockings.
Mona read a touching letter from Gerry Fluke about Kathy.
Sheep to Shawl- Letters have been sent out regarding the new rules and to check the blog. Letters sent to Kalamalka,Ponderosa, Monashee and Langley.No team is yet in place.
Ukanknits- knitting tit-bits for women in Mexico.

March 27th .
As well as spinning, we encourage you to bring your knitting, sewing, "to finish" items or maybe you have an idea you would like to share with everyone.
There will be lots to see and share. Bring your show & tell, "shop 'til you drop", and of course, fun meeting up with friends. So please come and make this a real "Fun Day".
The cost for the day is $15.00, which includes lunch and all day refreshments. If you would like a commercial table the cost is $25.
If our long distance friends would like to come and need an overnight stop-over, we can offer some accommodation but please let us know in plenty of time.

Judith thanked Gudrun for hosting our potluck supper. She also extended a thank you to everyone for a beautiful Christmas sale.

Minutes of the November meeting were adopted as printed by Anne, Jean seconded. Carried.

Treasurer reported that we had our best Christmas sale to date. Gudrun had the highest sales. Saturday Nov. 27,2010 has been booked for the next sale.

Corrections to the Oct. 4, 2009 minutes were made- Marcia to be the workshop coordinator and the Spin-In was Oct.22 at Noelle's. Wendy moved that the minutes be adopted as printed and corrected.
Treasurer's report was given by Noelle. Judith submitted a bill for $25.98 for her work on "Magic in the Water ''. Carried.
Noelle received a thank you from the Fall Fair for our participation in the Sheep to Shawl and the Spinning proficiency.
Library: The inventory list went out as an e-mail. Thank you to Elvi and Darlene for doing a wonderful job on re-organizing our library. Darlene gave a brief overview on how it now works. Fines are $1/book/ magazine/video/month.
Equipment: Please check your stash and equipment for the missing bobbins. Who do the other 2 bobbins belong to?
Fibres Unlimited: Anne finished 2 blankets. Elvi is weaving on the fish warp and Anne and Gabriele are going to put on a supplementary warp.
Workshops: Marcia is looking at several options. In January workshop on knitting little bitty things and in May one on sewing handwovens. If you have any ideas please contact Marcia.
Christmas Sale : November 21 "Snowflakes" Posters and ads will be going up. Julia will play her harp. Bring goodies for the tea room-Anne and Mona to do the Tea Room. Set up will be at 8:00 am Saturday morning. Contact Gudie or Gudrun if you have any questions.
Ukanknits- 8 people attended Glenda's knit-in.Darlene talked about Mex Tits Bits knitting breast prosthesis for third world countries. See her for instructions.
ANWG: Denise is a board member and she encouraged the guild to apply for award/grants to help with workshops. Next year is a scholarship year.

1. Letters have been sent to Catherine, Leny and Marge that newsletters will no longer be mailed to them.
2. Sheep to ShawlMotion to present the three options presented at the last meeting by Darlene. Marcia seconded. A narrow margin (1 Vote) passed the Sheep to Shawl to continue with new rules. The new rule committee will consist of Marcia, Mona, Anne, Catherine, Judith and Darlene.

Out of the guild membership of 40+ it took 7 members to have the largest vote for the decision to be made concerning the Sheep to Shawl. Sadly, it was a poor turnout for the Guilds meeting last Monday night. The Christmas Sale was also on the agenda. I wondered where everyone was.... I admit I went home at the coffee break not staying for the Show and Tell and Program. It was 9.30pm. I am getting too old to stay up that late!

Christmas Aprons

Thursday 22nd October approx 12 members met at Judiths house to make our Christmas Aprons. We made a great team, measuring and cutting the material, sewing straps and pockets, pressing and then sewing the pieces together. Judith kept us supplied with tea, coffee and homebaked cookies. Then at lunchtime produced some delicious homemade tomato soup and bread, you spoilt us. Thank you Judith for the use of your home. Unfortunately we did not finish all the aprons so another workbee will be held tomorrow. Thursday 5th November at Judiths 1 -4pm.

Also, a Cherriville 60" loom for Free - needs to be assembled and there may be some question about wheather it is square. She lives on the corner of Canyon Rd. and ? Her phone # is 546-6084. We'd like to inform you all that Marcia now holds the office of "Workshop Coordinator." Thank you very much for that, Marcia!

It turns out that Marcia actually volunteered to do workshops at the meeting but neither myself nor Gabriele heard her. I guess that either means that Marcia is too sweet, too demure, and too soft-spoken, or we all talk too much, too loud, and too often!
Either way, we're very happy she has volunteered. Gabriele has inserted her name in the minutes to reflect the correction.

If anyone of you have any workshop wishes or ideas, please let Marcia know.

Conference - June 4 - 6, 2009
King’s College has had some major renovations and additions since the Edmonton Weavers last hosted a HWSDA Conference. As well as the tower accommodations, there is now an apartment complex. There is also RV parking available without plug-ins or hook-ups.
Food: King’s College has a contract with a chef who provides wonderful, mouth-watering menus. Special diet requirements have been taken into consideration, plus healthy snacks for nutritional breaks and of course coffee will be available…
Vendors: The location for the Vendors will be in the huge gym, which is located right across from the cafeteria where many of the meals will be served. Along side the vendors will be the location for the FIBRE OLYMPIC CHALLENGES on Friday afternoon.
Fibre Olympic Challenges: Friday afternoon in the gym along side with the Vendors. IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY STARTED IT IS NOT TOO LATE, IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO START GETTING YOUR FIBRE TEAM READY! START TRAINING FOR THE FIBRE OLYMPICS! Details in the next issue of Running Threads or keep checking thise website.
Instructors, Workshops and Seminars: We have had many wonderful, exciting proposals come our way. We have chosen what we believe is different, challenging and an interest to all levels of expertise. Now, you don’t think we will actually let it slip as to what will be offered? Contracts have not been finalized at this time of writing.
PRE-CONFERENCE: Exciting news just fresh from the HWSDA Executive meeting. No, we're not letting the cat out of the bag for sneak previews of our Instructor line-up... It has been decided to open the registration to non-members of HWSDA. Non-members of HWSDA are now able to register for the pre-conference only, but only after the early registration deadline. Okay all you HWSDA members, it is time to start promoting the wonderful pre-conference opportunities to your non-member fibre friends.
Juried Show: Please read the separate information below provided by the Juried Show Committee. Something new…Prizes for FIRST-TIMERS. For those of us who are not necessarily new with our fibre arts, but never have entered anything into the Juried Show – this is our year… The area for the Juried Show, Fibre Fair and Teacher’s Show will be in a large well-lit area. More room for wandering around in awe!
Fibre Fair: We have this big, well-lit room! It would be a shame not to have representation from Guilds or Groups of Fibre Friends. Get those creative juices flowing. Show all of us what you are made of….
Fashion Show: We felt the Fashion Show should be front and centre this year. The FASHION SHOW is taking on the runway Saturday evening after the banquet. As mentioned before, if you are runway shy, models will be available.
Keynote Speaker: She bubbles! She is funny! She has a wealth of knowledge! She will entertain you Sunday morning.
Conference Colours and Logo: In keeping with our theme of the 2010 Olympics, the colours are: bronze, silver, gold, white and black. Yes, “The” Olympic rings are five in number, but we cannot copy that logo…Jean Connor, our lovely logo creator, has designed three balls of fibre, bronze, silver and gold, coming from a spindle onto a bobbin.
Door Prizes: Still under discussion - watch for updates! Our intention is to include a conference schedule of events for the next issue of Running Threads. For conference updates, please check this website.

I thought I might like to share a picture I took this summer, my Teachers Exhibit piece at the Gibsons Landing Fibre Arts Festival in August. It is handwoven bamboo woven in Bronson lace and the summer top has an accent band of Bobbin Lace made from the same thread.

A SEPTEMBER NOTE TO SAY . . .
Our new guild year is about to start. Just a reminder of our meeting October 5, 2009, 7:30 p.m. It's hard to believe that summer has passed us by.
As well, Fibres Unlimited will be meeting in the afternoon. Come at a time that is convenient for you. Everyone is welcome. There's some terrific weaving going on in the guild room. It seems our looms are busy (for the first time in years). As soon as one warp is woven off, something else goes on. Come and see what's going on! Don't forget, the group goes out for a nice supper before the meeting, which makes it a most enjoyable day.
We're hoping for a good turnout at the meeting. We have a very full agenda to discuss, sheep to shawl, Christmas sale, our new Library's wonderful facelift, plus elections, et cetera. We value your presence and your vote when we need to determine things. Our guild is only as good as you make it. Looking forward to seeing you all!

Don't forget your show and tell hopefully we will have time for it and I am sure there is a lot after the summer break!

Here is a scarf that I cannot show at the meeting as for sentimental reasons has gone to University. It is made from fleece from one of our Corridale ewes, which I dyed and then spun the roving with some Columbia ( the sheep we had in Manitoba) mill spun yarn that I had dyed years ago, it went together. The finished scarf was knitted on 12mm needles. So my son has a scarf from his sheep dyed, spun and knitted by his mother. C

Linen Rugs

Someone expressed an interest in rugs to me so I am sending pictures of the linen rugs, very coarse and thick, that I saw on my trip. The first picture is from Grand Forks. The three pictures following are from Castlegar. They are very thick – I would not have wanted to weave that coarse a fabric but I guess they would wear well! I also was amazed at the colours in the rugs as well but couldn’t find out much about how they were dyed etc.
Anyway I hope the guild finds them interesting. Cheers. Jean

Grand Forks Museum. Children were encouraged to feel various fleeces lined up in large containers in the hall to guess what animal they came from There were about ten jars I believe. They were also encouraged to try their hand at a loom set up for weaving a rag rug.

At Castlegar there was a communal house with wonderful exhibits. The last one being a wedding dress for a young woman. Fascinating place with a statue of Tolstoy in the garden. He was the Russian who helped this sect escape from religious persecution in Russia.

Selkirk Guild

The last pictures are of the Selkirk Guild. This guild has a large room in one of the buildings on the grounds of the restored Doukhobor village site. There was some lovely weaving and one of the members was weaving at the time. I had a chance to talk to her and she was telling me they have a study group. There were several small looms threaded at the time and one large one as well. She was busy winding a warp and preparing to thread a loom. Cheers. Jean

Celebrate BC Day

Just a reminder that we will have a Spin In at Piccadilly Mall on Friday, July 31st at 10 a.m. Bring along your wheel, weaving, knitting, or whatever you wish. This is a special celebration that Piccadilly is having to help kick off the B.C. Day long weekend. Lots of fun things going on at the mall. There will be a pancake breakfast, farm and craft market, customer appreciation day, barbecue, contests, multicultural entertainment and and a craft station for the kids. Finally got to the Black Sheep Gathering! It's been on my to-do list for many, many years, and somehow just never happened. This year, Gloria and I decided to go. Wayne and Dave packed their golf clubs and off we went. Of course, the only thing Gloria and I needed were our cheque books! I had high expectations of this event (built up over the years) , and it did not disappoint.

The Black Sheep Gathering is a large sheep and wool fair. Of course, sheep are big there, but it also has a large component of angora goats, with the national show being held there, as well. Many breeds of sheep and goats are shown and exhibited and quality of judging and livestock was extremely high. It was such a pleasure to be able to look at some of the rare breeds and see wonderful examples of their breed. The more common wool breeds, Romney, Merinos, Rambouillet, etc, were there, plus Shetlands, Jacobs, Wensleydales, Teeswater, Navajo-Churro and more. They even had coloured angora goats. Coloured fleece of any kind is big at Black Sheep!

The trade show was fabulous. There were over 80 vendors, three buildings full! Prices were reasonable. Anything you would ever want to buy was there, fibre, knitting needles, books, dyes, patterns, yarns, etc, in thing you would ever want to buy was there, fibre, knitting needles, books, dyes, patterns, yarns, etc, in spades. Parking was free and admission to buildings was free, as well.

The fleece show was superb with outstanding quality. The fleeces were judged, then set out for the spinners to preview them before the sale the following day. Spinners lined up
(more than a block and a half long) before they open the doors for the sale. (Gloria and I just watched this amazed!) Instructions were given, there was to be no fighting over fleeces! High prices reflected the high quality, with prices well over $100 for top placing fleeces, with lots of outstanding fleeces in the $50, $60, $70 range. Black Sheep usually has over 500 top quality spinning fleeces entered each year.

There was a beautiful gallery show with many entries. We spent a lot of time in there just looking!

There were also many workshop and seminars to choose from. They were very reasonably priced, roughly $40 for a half day and $75 for a whole day. I spoke to a few Canadian gals there and they had good reports about their workshops. There were, of course, a lot of spinning workshops, however, they did cover all topics from rug hooking, sweater design, rug weaving, tapestry, dyeing chemical and natural, felting, and much more.

We also watched the Sheep-To-Shawl competition and brought home some new ideas which might be a consideration for our competition in the future. Some of these ideas might solve our competition's financial problems. More on that later.

There were some very beautiful shawls, but I've got to say, our teams could have stood up to any of them! Do teams in our competition (tucked away in a cozy corner in the Interior of B.C.) realize how beautiful their shawls really are and appreciate the high standard of quality they have reached, both creatively and technically? I hope so.
I'm convinced the teams that participate in our competition can hold their own in any sheep to shawl event, no matter where it's held.

Fibre Week at Olds

I thought I would pass along a few of the pics I took at Fibre Week. The wool judging classes were amazing - what an education. Wool of dozens of breeds of sheep, alpaca, llama, and mohair. Next year they're hoping to add a cashmere class. I always enjoy the Fashion Shows 0 some awesome items, with handspinning for many different types of projects - all part of the Master Spinners assignments. Our guild-member Denice McMechan also took part in an impromptu team in the alpaca to project competition. Lots going on!!!! Sharon

We were very sorry to hear that Suzanne (from the Kalamalka Guild) lost her husband very suddenly a short time ago. Her husband had a heart attack. Suzanne was away in Quebec visiting her family at the time. Suzanne has been a familiar face at our sheep to shawl competition. She comes along with the Vernon team and always lends a hand in our tea room, giving assistance wherever she can. Her help has always been so appreciated. The Shuswap Guild has sent a card expressing our deepest sympathy for her loss.

JUST A NOTE . . .Our guild year officially came to an end this June and it seemed to sneak up on us, didn't it! I'm always surprised when it's June, and I don't know why. The guild year flies by so quickly, we turn around and June is here. Some members (who wish to combat guild-withdrawal) have decided that it might be fun to continue to get together over the summer. If you want to hold a get-together, please let me know. I'll be happy to send a fan-out email about it.
Having said that, we'll start our summer activities with a favourite spin-in at Darlene's home at the lake. That's on July 14th at 10 a.m. Please try to come (that includes all weavers and knitters, too!) as it's always enjoyable. Bring your bathing suit, if you wish! If any new members need directions, please email me and I'll give you Darlene's phone number.
Also a friendly reminder for those who still have library books out. Please return them as Darlene is about to start her new library cataloguing system.
Another thing we need everyone to be thinking about is our new guild year starting this September (I know, I know, it's only July!). Election time will be just around the corner and we'll need a new roster of people. Have you been thinking there might be something you would like to do for the guild? Maybe you would like to stand for one of the executive positions or perhaps a committee. Don't be shy or hesitant because you have no experience in such things. Your input is invaluable and we, as a guild, always need it. A guild is only as good as its members! The more people participate, the more they will enjoy it.
If you hold a position now and are willing to remain, please let me know. If you need to step down, please also let me know that, as well, so we can look for someone to fill it.

An Idea For Your Summer Holiday!

If your summer travel plans include driving through or near Grand Forks B.C. , here's something you shouldn't miss. In honour of the International Year of Natural Fibre, the Boundary Spinners and Weavers Guild, Joybilee Farm and the Courthouse Museum have put their efforts together and created a textile show called The Thread of Our Heritage, Toil and a Peaceful Life, which reflects the local area's Doukhobor textile history since 1899 when they first immigrated to Canada from Russia to escape religious persecution.
These are textiles that have never been displayed before. I'm sure they have been lovingly preserved and protected in people's homes all these years. And guess what? You are actually allowed to touch them. The show includes spinning and weaving of all types of textiles, clothing, rugs, etc., using wool and flax and hemp (which they grew themselves).
Christine Dalziel of Greenwood B.C. has written a wonderful article in the The Bulletin (the newsletter for the Guild of Canadian Weavers), Volume 52 No.2, explaining this show, its content and historical significance. Check it out! Here's a quote from Christine's article:
"The show at the courthouse museum includes a natural fiber learning centre, a hemp display, as well as Doukhobor textiles and tools for fiber preparation, spinning, and finishing. A floor loom is set up in the area with a warp for a 'rag rug' style peace banner. The public is invited to help us weave a Peace Banner which will become part of the Grand Forks Art Gallery's permanent collection. The Peace Banner will be unfurled from the loom on International Peace Day, September 21st and will be displayed in local public buildings."
The public can view this show from March 7th to Labour Day, 2009.

NEW GUILD ROOM INFORMATION!

We'd like to inform you that as of this week, the Rec Centre has changed the locks on all the rooms in the building. Presumably, this is for security reasons. If you are one of the people who has a key (that they keep on their person) you will find that that key no longer works. If you wish to visit the guild room, please go to the main office upstairs and sign in to get the new key. Return the key to the front desk when you are finished your visit.
We have also been informed that we will be charged $3 a key for the permanent keys that we keep on our person. We will discuss this at a later time with the executive/membership and decide how to handle this.

Also we have had reports of a odd smell in the guild room on occasion. It seems to be one of those elusive things that come and go. We are trying to track this down to determine what it is. We want to make sure that the furnace/heating system is not backwashing and coming into our guild room. If you visit the guild room and notice this, please make a note of it, date, time, how long it lasted, et cetera, and let me know. You can phone or email me.

Fibres Unlimited: Gloria??
Gudrun’s runner is warped up. There is room for one more weaver to sign up. The fish have been warped, and the 4 harness loom will be used for the sheep to shawl contest.

Gudrun’s Leno workshop on Thursday. Gudrun would prefer an earlier start, so participants should arrive prepared at 9:30 AM at Picadilly Mall. Meet at Jane’s place if you are uncertain where people are. Participants should bring a 3 ring binder for notes.

Judith read an email from Denice at Burton requesting that workshops should be scheduled on the weekends. Usually this is done.

Christmas Sale: Think snowflakes for your theme. The sale date is November 21.

Sheep to Shawl: One spinning session has been held already, and a second session will be help on the 16th. Judith will be holding a demonstration on how to scour sheep’s wool. This will be held at Judith’s place on Thursday, June 25th @ 7:00 PM. The 25 was chosen because some people will be spinning at the Okeefe Ranch during the day, from 10:00 AM to approximately 3:00 PM.

Knit in Public Day Join the Knit-In on June 13th on the Ross Street Plaza from 10:00 AM onwards. Anne is to put a notice in Friday AM, and also in the market? Gudie to make a sign advertising the event. In the event of bad weather, the event will move to Picadilly Mall.

IPE/Fall Fair/Fair Meeting.
IPE location the same as last year. -The Educational component should be handled by Fibres Unlimited.

She has 2 garbage bags of white and 2 of black, but warns there is a "lot of hay" in it because they loved to roll in their feed.

Wind Up Pot Luck Dinner/Meeting JUNE 8TH

I'm packing to leave for Spokane and looking at my calendar at the same time. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to remind everyone our wind-up meeting/pot luck dinner is the second Monday of the month, not the first as it would normally be. Everybody show up at Elvi's on JUNE 8TH at 6 p.m. (not June 1st.) If you missed the May meeting, you may not realize we're doing this to accommodate several of our members who are attending conferences during the first week of June, both in Alberta and Washington. We'll have lots to talk about, I'm sure, hearing about everyone's workshops and seminars. Hope all have a wonderful time! Brevity will rule at our meeting, to leave more time for socializing and enjoying each other's company!

Continuing Guild Activities During Summer
Regarding our informal plans to try to keep some guild activities going during the summer, we'll keep everyone up to date by the email or the blog. If you have anything you wish to do during the summer such as have a spin in, putting the dye pot on or whatever, just let me know. I'll fan out a group member email to inform everyone. Just let me know.

Library Books!
Also a reminder to those who still have library books out, please, please, return them by the June meeting. If you can't seem to get to the guild room, bring them to the meeting. I'm sure Darlene will be more than happy to take them off your hands. Darlene and her helpers will be doing a huge new reorganizing and inventory of our library this summer and we need all books to be back on the shelves. The return of all books will be greatly appreciated.

FIBRES UNLIMITED
As well, Fibres Unlimited will not be meeting during the day of our meeting, as they normally do. It will be too difficult for members to bring their pot luck with them, so we'll bypass it this time around.

Support Spinning

At Gloria's 'knit in' last Monday Judith demonstrated support spinning which she had just learnt at a workshop held in Alberta a few days before. The Russian born teacher actually makes the 'support spinners' (equipment not people!). They produce very fine yarn, yards and yards. I am sure Judith would tell you all about them.
There was not a lot of knitting produced that day, instead we took a walk outside and visited this years Angora kids, Highland Cattle and chicks. As well as the animals Gloria spends a lot of time in her beautiful garden which is just really springing into life.

SAGA has confirmed the date for our sale is SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2009. Mark that on your calendars! Keeping our Christmas Sale in the front of our minds throughout the year really helps. Our Christmas sales are always so beautiful and successful, but we directly owe that to the beautiful product our members bring in. Without that, we have no sale. I'm sure we'll hear the looms humming along, the wheels spinning and the needles clicking away making beautiful things. Don't forget the theme is SNOWFLAKES! Hopefully, we'll see them everywhere!(I mean, of course, the indoor variety of snowflakes, not the outside variety!)

GREETINGS EVERYONE!
Spring is here for sure! We know this because some of us spent the day spinning on Saturday at Clare's farm, (Harmonious Homestead and Ewe) and watched little lambs bouncing all over the place. It was a delightful day. Many thanks, Clare, for the venue. There will be another spin-in at Clare's on May 9th. Please consider coming and joining us, even for a couple of hours.
PATIENCE PAYS OFF
I'm happy to inform you all that one of our missing bobbins has shown up. It was found in some wool that had not been looked since the last sheep to shawl (how many of us do that!) It's so easy to do. Sheep to Shawl, spin ins, or any other gathering where spinners congregate with their wheels are the perfect scenario for these sorts of things to get mixed up and go missing. I'd ask you all, again, to please look through your stash really, really carefully, particularly, in parts of it that you haven't looked at for a while. If we keep at this, we may find them all!
To prevent the loss of your own equipment, etc., this might be a good time to consider labelling all of your own equipment, as well, bobbins, carders, combs, lazy kates, spinning wheels (yes, even wheels), or anything else that we cart around with us to our gatherings.
KNITTING ANYONE?
Just a reminder that we're knitting at Gudie's house on Monday April 19th (that's tomorrow). Hope to see you there. I hope all of you are thinking about where we should be on KNITTING IN PUBLIC DAY in June.
SCOURING RAW FLEECE
I had offered to demonstrate to the Sheep To Shawl convenors how to wash their Perendale fleece for the competition. The situation has morphed a bit and others are asking if it's all right for them to come as well. Of course, it is.
I will now be putting on a small workshop (couple of hours long) on scouring all types of raw wool. The workshop will be held at my house. This will be an easy-peasy workshop, in that there is no preparation on your part, no homework, no notes, etc. All you need to do is bring yourself and your listening skills. I am suggesting everyone throw in a couple of dollars for the talk and all proceeds will go to the guild.
I would appreciate knowing who might be interested in coming to this. It's a component of our craft that has had very little attention paid to it in the last few years, and much of the information that is out there is very outdated and in some cases, incorrect. If you would like to update your skills on scouring wool, please feel free to attend. Let me know by email if you're interested. We'll settle on a date in the near future.

BELT THOSE SPINNING WHEELS IN!
Many of you by now have heard the tragic story in the news of the young woman in the Lower Mainland who was in a car accident and died. She had put her laptop in the back seat (unsecured, of course) and during the accident, the laptop flew through the air as a uncontrolled projectile, hit her in the head and killed her. We all need to think about unsecured objects in our cars as we travel to our spinning and weaving activities. We know the best place for our spinning wheels and other equipment is in the trunks of our cars, but sometimes this is not possible. If you need to carry your wheel in the passenger part of your car, please, please remember to secure it with a seatbelt. If you were ever hit by a spinning wheel (even those folded up Lendrums) during an accident, it would have disasterous and probably lethel consequences. Small equipment should be encased in something and controlled somehow as well. We love you all, so please keep yourself and friends safe.

Minutes of the Shuswap Spinners and WeaversApril 6,2009 20 members present
1. Minutes of the March meeting adopted as printed, Anne. Seconded Sue . Carried
2. Treasurer's report was given. Anne moved that we renew subscription to Handwoven. Gudie seconded. Carried
3. Sheep to Shawl Invitations have been sent, the fleece was bought and Gudrun is the judge. So far the team consists of weaver - Sharon, spinners - Shirley, Gloria and Denise. Michele offered to look after the tea. Judith will help with the washing of the fleece. Date to be set in May. Spinning proficiency needs a co-ordinator
4. Workshops
(a). The workshop with Sharon went well.
(b). Leno workshop - June 11 ( 10 am ) with Gudrun $30 cost will be held at the Piccadilly Mall
5. Library had new magazines in.
6. Fibres Unlimited is proceeding well. New project on the 8 harness loom
7. Historian - newspaper clippings on cottage industry in local paper
8 Arts Council - Meet on March 30 regarding co-sponsorship grants. Awards and grants that individuals may apply for deadline is April 30.Application forms on website shuswapartscouncil.bc.ca

1. Discussion on the flying shuttle or 20+. Flying shuttle is $600 and the 20+ is $1000Gloria thought that a warp should be put on the loom to see what we need.
2. Magic in the Water - Judith and Fibres Unlimited to put together an educational program.
3. Spinning at Harmonious Homestead- Bring wheel, folding chair, lunch and your name badge April 18 (10-4) If spinning on gravel bring a plastic bag to put the wheel on.Shearing will happen on April 18. There are a total of 6 Saturdays that we can come and spin.
4. Equipment Rates:Large equipment $ 15 / month. Reeds $ 15 / month. Rag cutter $ 10 / week. Spinning wheels $ 15 / month needs a $ 150 deposit. Picker $ 15 / month needs a $ 150 deposit. Inkle loom $ 5 / month. Drum carder $ 15 / month needs a $150 deposit. Library rental: Materials not returned Books - charged the price of the book or replacement. Late fees are $ 1/ month. Gudie moved that the equipment and library rental fees be adopted. Jennifer seconded. Carried.
New Business
1. Gloria moved that we need a clock in the guild room
2. Judith suggested that the Treasurer give us an income report to give us an idea of how we are doing.

Just a Note. . .

Didn't it seem lately that we would never see spring again? Even though we were all cheering her on, she has been reluctant. But, take heart, because I know she is here for sure; the snow is almost gone from our fields, my crocuses are blooming, the tulips are coming up and the goldfinches are at my bird feeder! And it is so welcome. We'll be pulling up our sleeves and digging in that dirt soon and loving it! But nothing ever is completely a downside. The cold weather, certainly, has given us more time for weaving, spinning, knitting and all the other things we love to do. Our members have had a busy winter, our last show and tell proved that!

Guild weaving (FIBRES UNLIMITED) continues to hum along in the guild room. I hear Darlene and Elvi have put on another new warp (I think for runners). If you're interested, please inquire and get your name on the list. Tea towels just flew off the loom with that last warp. Everyone enjoyed the weaving and the camaraderie that came along with it! For those who are new at weaving, this is a wonderful way to get your feet wet without needing to acquire a loom. There are a lot of people to help you, so don't be shy. We specialize in being terrific mentors and are happy to help those who are new, so please join in. We will be at the guild room, April 6th at 1 p.m. and, of course, will go out for dinner before the guild meeting.

KALAMALKA GUILD'S ANNUAL SPIN IN is on April 4th. Everyone is welcome. As this is a fund raiser for the Vernon guild, it is always worthy of our support. It's a great day of spinning, socializing, eating, and shopping! If you want to join in, contact Trixie at the Vernon Guild to let her know you're coming (as they need to make attendance plans). You can pay when you arrive. Hope to see you there.

We'll be spending our planned SPIN IN DAY at Clare's farm, HARMONIOUS HOMESTEAD on April 18th. Everyone welcome to join. We'll discuss more about this at the April upcoming meeting.

Most of you have probably noticed in your travels around the Internet, that WORLD KNITTING IN PUBLIC DAY is June 18th. Our knitting group will probably put on their thinking caps (knitted, of course) and come up with a place in public that we'd like to be on that day. Discussion material at our next meeting, no doubt.

'Spin in" at Monas

It was a small cozy 'Spin in' at Mona's last Tuesday. Was everyone tired after Sharon's workshop? But we were honoured by seeing the nearly completed quilt that Mona is making for her sister's grand daughter as a wedding present. The quilt is black and white, 56 squares and in each square is 48 pieces, just beautiful. Then Mona showed us into her weaving room, besides a loom, books and yarn a lot of inspiration. This tour was after a delicious lunch of Mona's minestrone soup, pita bread, hummus and a Chocolate/Cherry trifle 'yummy'! Thank you Mona for your hospitality.
