Something Interesting

I think that is an interesting article I read in a book from Isaac Asimov "Words of Science and the History behind them": The first line was a textile cord, rather than a mark on paper. Line comes from the Latin "linea" which probably comes from the old name of "flax" (hence, our word linen for what may be man's oldest textile). Since the word straight line is but another version of "stretch" the phrase straight line is related, in derivation and sound, to "stretched linen", and it was a stretched linen cord that civilized man may have first used as a straight line in making land measurements. See you at the meeting on Monday, Cheers, Gudrun.

Fibres West

Penelope Fibre Arts of Surrey, B.C. is pleased to announce “FIBRES WEST”, an event to take place March 20 and 21st, 2009 at the AgRec Building on the Abbotsford Exhibition Park Grounds. Come join us for two days of shopping, education and inspiration. Check out our website www.fibreswest.com and blog for all the details. New vendors are being added all the time, so please check back regularly to get a full list of who will be attending.
To date we have booked three excellent speakers for the show, Ivan Sayers, the entertaining past costume curator of the Vancouver Museum who will be speaking on historical knitting, Judith Glibbery, expert on all things “sheep” who will be speaking on spinning fine fleece, and of special interest to weavers, Ingrid Boesel of Fiberworks-pcw will be giving a talk entitled “The Lazy Weaver – how to get the most from a warp”. Please check the site for exact times.
Besides tempting you with fibre vendors there will be an Artisan’s Gallery to inspire, a Master Spinner, Knitter and Weaver booth where you can ask all your burning questions, Fibre Animals, demos, and much more.
The fine print:

Tea Towel/Runner Guild Project is Now Underway!

For those interested in weaving off a tea towel or runner , we'd like to let you know that the Fibres Unlimited Guild project (warped on the smaller guild loom) is underway and now ongoing. Elvi has woven off 60 inches worth of runner and Darlene is now busy working on her tea towels. Darlene has woven off one and is busy working on her second one. Those who have expressed an interest in this, Gloria, Ann, Gabrielle and Judith (is there anyone else we've missed??) please keep in touch to find out when it's your turn. The warp is a neutral cream colour. Please bring your own weft for the project. Probably 2/8 is a good choice but, of course, you can weave with anything you like. When you have finished your project, please speak to Gloria about how much each of you owes for the warp and who you should pay.
If you're interested in weaving on a guild project in the future (the big Woolhouse loom is also being warped) try to attend the Fibres Unlimited get-together on Monday, February 2nd at 1 p.m. This is the day of the meeting. It's a great opportunity to spend a enjoyable afternoon with your guild friends, go out for supper with them, and attend the meeting all in a single trip! That's definitely a cool "act of green."
Happy Weaving!JG
