A Few Guild Odds and Sods

Greetings everyone! No doubt there’s a lot of guild withdrawal going on out there. I know I'm missing it! The weather certainly seems to be sabotaging our efforts to get together. However, despite all the cancellations, we'll soldier on. I'm sure you're getting a lot done at home. and can't wait to see show and tell in March. I thought about having our meeting a week later on the 9th, but the meeting room was booked, so we'll just wait until March. Just to touch base, I thought I'd send out a few items that we normally would have talked about at our meeting.
FIBRES UNLIMITED WEAVING GROUP
Will meet on Monday, February 9 at 1 p.m. at the guild equipment room (that's this coming Monday). All are welcome. Come to weave, spin, knit, or whatever you wish. Hope to see you there.
HERITAGE WEEK AT PICCADILLY MALL - FEBRUARY 16 TO 21, 2009
We traditionally support Heritage Week at Piccadilly Mall in Salmon Arm in February so hope to see many of you there. Elvi usually keeps a roster of who's coming just so we keep a guild presence there each day of the week. Elvi has been in Mexico (what a lucky duck!) but I believe she's coming home on the 4th. Give her a call and let her know which day you can come. We will be having our Ucanknits and spins ins there, as well, this month.
ANWG 2009 CONFERENCE
Just a reminder that the classes are starting to fill up at the conference. If you're interested in going, you should have a peek at the website.
WORKSHOPSFASHION FABRICS AND FABRICS FASHIONED - MARCH 6 AND 7, 2009 - SHARON WICKSTROM
This two day, round-robin style workshop will guide you through weaving a number of unique fabrics - from deceptively easy to very impressive, in both 4 and 8 harness weaves, which can serve as fabrics for home décor, garments, or household linens. You will gain an understanding of how basic 4-harness weave structures can be compounded to create unique 8-harness weaves, how to add 4-side border et cetera. We will also cover *finishing* your fabrics, pitfalls to avoid, how to make up simple woven shapes into comfortable wearable garments. Tips and techniques for those who for those who wish to "cut and sew" will also be discussed along with embellishment techniques. The $7.00 workshop lab fee includes the Workshop Reference Binder. You can add your samples to the appropriate pages, providing you with a valuable resource for years to come. Students provide their own warp yarns.(Anyone interested in this workshop, please sign up quickly as March is just around the corner. You can get more information about cost from Sharon. Remember you should send your cheque to Noelle to reserve your space).
SHEEP TO SHAWL
By now you have all received the email from Noelle, Ann, and Gudie regarding taking over the STS competition. Terrific news! Thanks so much to all three of you.
WE NEED NEW CONVENORS FOR SKEIN & SPINNING COMPETITION
The redistribution of convenor roles means we are now looking for one or two members to be convenors for both the skein competition and the spinning competition. These two events are not a lot of work. Don't worry if you haven't had any experience in such things. It is definitely NEN! (that's no experience needed). You'll get lots of guidance. If you haven't helped out with putting on events at the fall fair in the past (or even if you have), we'd love to hear from you! Give Noelle a call.
FALL FAIR PRIZE MONEY SPONSORSHIP
For the past two years we have supplied fall fair prize money for classes in the textile building. In the past this usually has come in at around $100 plus or minus a few dollars. As our guild has voted in the past that we will continue to support the fall fair in this way and advise the fair board they can count on our prize money for 2009
EXTRA FALL FAIR TEXTILE CLASSES
Also please give Noelle or Gudie some feedback about these new classes they are thinking about. The extra spinning class and the combined technique class sound like great ideas to me, but they're looking for ideas from all of you. We are working on a time dead line so if you have any ideas, don't wait! The fair board must know in two weeks. Call or email Noelle.
UCANKNITS MONTHLY MEETING
The Ucanknits will have their monthly meeting at Piccadilly Mall on Monday, February 16th at 10 a.m. Bring your knitting or even your wheel and we'll see you there.
MONTHLY SPIN INS
Our spin ins will be held at Piccadilly Mall, as well. Come any day of the week with your wheel and get a whack of spinning done. Plus it's such fun! We can go out for lunch, spin, and visit. Remember to phone Elvi so we can get the roster covered evenly.
Boy, do we have a lot of catching up to do. Cannot wait to see you all. (Jg)
